Recent Incursions
Ausbike - Bike It!
This term we have been busy with lots of incursion opportunities with various organisations; one of these is Ausbike. Their school cycling program, Bike It!, is something we love to participate in and we were fortunate to be able to welcome them once again to St Johns. Our students in grades 3 - 6 brought along their bikes for the day and each class enjoyed a session with one of Ausbikes instructors. They learned about bike safety checks, how to pass people when riding in a safe manner, how to indicate to riders and traffic when riding out and about, and also enjoyed games to improve their general balance and bike handling skills. It was a great session and we look forward to seeing Ausbike again next year!
Chinese Dragon Dance
St Johns students enjoyed a Chinese Dragon Dance incursion this term. In Chinese culture, it is believed that performing the dragon dance drives away evil spirits and ushers in good luck and blessings for the community. Students from Prep to Year 6 had the chance to participate in this authentic cultural experience, to dance the Chinese dragon, as well as practise Chinese Qi Gong and dance. The activities aroused students’ interests in learning the Chinese language and deepened their understanding of Chinese culture. It was a memorable event.
Downball Australia
St John's welcomed instructors from Downball Australia this term. Grades 3-6 again had the privilege to participate in a fun session of downball activities, learning about its history, as well as the modern translation of downball rules and how this works in the schoolyard. The instructors walked us through our knowledge of downball rules and helped us learn the correct way to play. They also introduced us to six-square downball which was a great challenge and also meant more people could join in the fun. Downball Australia runs regular tournaments for schools to participate in and the sport is such a great way to get everyone involved. We had a fun afternoon and look forward to doing it again in the future.
