The Arts
The Arts program at St. John’s School is a very important part of the overall education of our students. It consists of Performing and Visual Arts and is taught across all year levels.
Performing Arts
The lively and engaging Performing Arts program enables students to develop their creative and expressive capacities. Through the study of Music, Dance and Drama students learn about the different practices, disciplines and traditions that have shaped the expression of culture locally, nationally and globally.
Through Performing Arts, students will experience how to work effectively in a team, develop their self esteem and confidence, develop their critical thinking and analysis of various performances and the ability to present and perform in front of an audience.
The biennial School Production allows for all students to showcase their talents to the wider community.
Students also have the opportunity to take part in the School Choir. This group has the option of performing to the wider community. Individual and small group instrumental lessons are also offered during class time.
Visual Arts
Creativity and imagination are fostered through the Visual Art program which provides opportunities for students to develop skills in the core areas of painting, drawing, ceramics, construction, mixed media and technology.
The history of Art is embedded in the projects that students complete and gallery visits both virtual and actual, are used to motivate and inspire. Just like learning to read and write, students need to be equipped with specific skills before they can paint and draw with confidence.
The children are not only left to explore materials, but are explicitly taught how to use them so they can make informed choices when expressing themselves visually.
A biennial Art Show provides an opportunity for our budding artists to share their creations with the wider community.
