2025 Sovereign Hill Camp
Grade 5 Camp to Sovereign Hill
Our Grade 5 students recently spent three unforgettable days at Sovereign Hill, immersing themselves in life on the goldfields during the 1850s. Throughout the camp, students explored a range of hands-on activities including bowling, confectionary making (and sampling), gold panning, gold smelting and pouring, and even experiencing the darkness and cramped quarters of a gold mine!
A highlight of the experience was the Sovereign Hill School, where students stepped back in time to role-play as state school pupils from the 1850's. Dressed in period clothing, they took part in traditional lessons such as drawing and drafting, sewing and embroidery, and even tackled the 17-times tables! They also enjoyed old-fashioned games and a lively pantomime from the era that had everyone laughing and participating.
Students were captivated by the Aura Light Show, which brought to life the events that led to the Eureka Stockade and the beginning of workers' unions in Australia.
It was a fun-filled and educational adventure where students not only learned about our gold rush history but also developed independence, teamwork, and confidence while sleeping away from home. Although no gold nuggets were found, the memories made were pure treasure!
