What's Happening in Prep?
Social and Emotional Learning (S.E.L)
The Preps have been very busy exploring what makes each of them special and unique. Through collabrative discussion and creative activities, our youngest learners are beginning to recognise and celebrate their individual strengths, interests, and qualities. This journey of self-discovery is an important part of developing our sense of identity and realising we all have special gifts. By fostering this sense of self, we help our Preps build a foundation of confidence, resilience, and a deep respect for the diversity within our school and wider community.
Holy Week
In Prep, our students have been learning about the significance of Holy Week and why it is an important time in the Christian calendar. They have explored the key events leading up to Easter and what these moments mean to us. Through age-appropriate stories and creative activities, the children followed Jesus’ journey from his joyful entrance on Palm Sunday to the solemnity of the Last Supper and the events of Good Friday. By reflecting on these powerful stories, our youngest learners are beginning to understand the depth of Jesus’ love and the promise of hope that Easter Sunday brings.
Mathematics
Our Prep students have been learning to partition numbers to ten and beyond recently in Mathematics. They are developing their understanding of how numbers can be broken apart and combined in different ways to support their mathematical thinking. Through hands-on exploration using concrete materials such as tens-frames and unifix cubes, our little learners are discovering that a number like seven isn't just a single entity, but can be made of five and two, or four and three. As their fluency in identifying these number bonds increases, students build the mental flexibility and number sense needed for addition and subtraction.
Geography
In Prep, the students have been learning about what a place is and what it means to be part of a community. They are exploring how people, spaces and shared experiences help create a sense of belonging. By investigating our own school grounds and the local Mitcham area, the children are identifying the landmarks and social hubs that make our environment special. Through storytelling and mapping activities, they are discovering that a "place" is more than just a physical location—it is shaped by the way we care for one another and the traditions we share.
